The question is what do you want out of the game. Playing the games can take patience and persistence if you choose to avoid all help. The game storyline and books are very enjoyable! It's equally self-evident when a certain journal entry or laboratory gadget is meant to inform a puzzle solution (which makes sense once you find out that the ages in Myst 3 were conceived as "lesson ages" to help educate yungins about the Art).īy contrast, I found Myst 4 Revelation to be as impenetrable as Riven, although it did have the most stunning visuals in my opinion. In every age, it's pretty self-evident what the puzzles are, and what you're trying to accomplish by solving them. In this regard, I really enjoyed Myst 3 Exile, which I found to be a much more straightforward game. I definitely struggled with both Myst and Riven, mostly because the information needed to solve a puzzle was so far from where the information would be used, and my memory wasn't strong enough to make the connections (for example, the tower rotation clues in Myst and the Plateau Island mapping device in Riven).Īnother thing that made Riven especially challenging for me were the red herrings and world-building details that weren't part of a puzzle at all (for example, I was convinced there was critical information to be gleaned from the beetle-shaped viewports on the walls of the rotating room - it never occurred to me that those were mostly there for atmosphere). I started going through new adventure games with my wife after I got married, and not only does it make for an overall more enjoyable and rewarding experience to have somebody else with you, but it also gives you a second person who might pick up on clues or solutions that you've missed. 3) If you can find a friend or other loved one to play through the games with you, do it together. I've done limited amounts of this myself so I don't know how effective it would be, but it may be worth a shot. 2) Making notes of what questions remain unanswered, or mysteries remain unsolved, may be helpful to help you think about things the right way. If you can become more persistent, it will probably make for a more rewarding experience for yourself, but even if you don't, there's no reason you should stop just because you can't figure them out.Īs for how to get better, my advice would be: 1) Try to train yourself to be more patient, be willing to look around everywhere multiple times without looking up help, and try to look at the big picture rather than honing in on specific clues or giving up on a puzzle just because you didn't see any obvious clues written down anywhere. So I'd say go ahead and continue playing if you're interested in the games and love them! Even if you are "not smart enough", it doesn't hurt anybody for you to play them anyway. I still do occasionally now with new adventure games, but much more rarely than I did with the Myst games. It wasn't until later on, after then, that I learned to be more patient and persistent before giving up. I went on to the next ones anyway, and did end up continuing to look up a fair amount of hints for both Exile and Revelation (I haven't played Myst V or Uru yet). I definitely did my share of looking up answers when I went through these games. I found this site to be good for just getting the hint you need: Once a game becomes tedious, I'm more apt to just go get a hint so I can get back to enjoying the game. Once it comes down to trudging back and forth looking for something I may have missed or having to constantly go back and forth between two locations to see what changes I made, the games start to become tedious. In the final analysis, if you're having a good time working through the games, then keep doing it.įor me, the most fun is the initial exploration and mapping out of each new world. I think it's just a matter of how your brain processes data. Some of the puzzles are so obscure that the hint left me feeling like nobody would ever figure that out on their own. Some hints left me feeling like a dope, because I should have been able to figure it out, myself. So, the second best thing was to try to use only enough of a hint to get me going without giving me the answer. I started every game in the series with the vow that I was not going to use any hints.
